Navigating the Transcultural Indian Ocean: Texts and Practices in Contact

An international workshop to approach from various perspectives the generation, constitution and circulation of nautical-related knowledge throughout the Indian Ocean World, including the Red Sea, and eastwards to the South and East China Seas, as far as the Moluccas and Japan, following the late medieval and early modern trade routes.

The proposed workshop will consist of a series of brief, “hands-on” meetings, where presenters would be expected to share a “case study”, a problem, or a curiosity in a collegial, relaxed setting. In other words, speakers will be able to enrol the expertise, insights and help of interested colleagues to explore, tackle or simply listen to a particular aspect of the workshop’s general theme. Studies dealing with primary sources in non-Western languages are most welcome, while naturally allowing for an audience of wide-ranging linguistic competences.
